Model United Nations
About
Welcome to our SU Society page!
Who we are
The Kent Model United Nations Society is the MUN Society of the University of Kent in Canterbury. We are a group of students dedicated to championing the United Nations, its values and principles, and promoting the crucial actions that this unique organization operates to save lives, encourage peace and protect the environment.
We practice Model United Nations debating, where we travel across Britain and the world to simulate debate in real United Nations councils and committees. During MUN conferences, students take the role of a country and represent their views on a particular topic within a UN simulation. We debate and negotiate to come up with co-operative solutions while making sure that our country’s interests are never off the table. Conferences are thus a good opportunity to practice your public speaking, team working and leadership skills! We aim to build an understanding of global challenges and governance amid youth that crosses borders of culture and nationality.
Our core values
At Kent MUN, we believe that Model UN is about improving your skills and getting to know more about international issues in a fun and relaxed way.
Inclusivity
MUN is a formidable opportunity of empowerment, and we aim to offer it to as many people as possible. We want to open Model UN to all students, regardless of where they grew up, how much money their parents earn or what they believe in. Funding is available to help our members attend external conferences if needed: speak to a Committee member about it!
Challenge
We want to make our events enjoyable and challenging to everyone regardless of previous experiences. As a Kent MUN member, you will receive comprehensive training and you will have many opportunities to practice your skills!
Internationalism
MUN societies and conferences are a great way to meet people from all over the world and to share different opinions and cultures. MUN is an inherently internationalist activity, and we believe that having this perspective is a valuable asset. We are proud to have four different nationalities on our Committee.
Governance
The society is led by a Committee, democratically elected by all members for a year. All members can run for committee positions during our yearly General Assembly.
What we do
Fun things
MUN Socials are a bit like MUN, which means it’s an absolute blast, but also a little bit formal when the occasion calls for it. Over a pint of Canterbury’s finest brews, you’ll be able to get to know your diplomatically-oriented colleagues.
Training
Throughout the year, the KentMUN Society provides comprehensive MUN training to members. We teach students how to research about their country, how to write a position paper in which they will expose their positions, how to use the rules of debate to their advantage and lead negotiations and how to write a meaningful resolution and get it passed.
External conferences
Not only do we host our own conference, but we will also take part in some of the world class MUN conferences happening here in the UK and abroad! This year, we're planning to attend CuiMUN in Cambridge, LiMUN in London, WorldMUN in Paris, and many others. We are really looking forward to these events, as they will enable us to discover new cities, different cultures and people, as well as to demonstrate how Kent MUNers debate!
KentMUN Conference!
Each year, we host our own conference, KentMUN Conference, on the University campus in Canterbury. This year, it will be held from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th November, and is accessible to Kent students at a discounted price. It promises to be an event like no other, so don’t miss the application deadline! We can’t wait to meet you.
